On May 19, 2022, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, says the water release would “be done in full conformity with the international standards and therefore it will not cause any harm to the environment.”

Research from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution confirms trace levels of radiation found on North America’s west coast are “well below internationally established levels of concern.”

Government report confirms Pacific seafood “… poses no radiation-related health concerns to those who consume it.”

“What [Oregon State University scientist Delvan Neville] found are Cesium levels [in Pacific Bluefin tuna] so low he’s comfortable eating his samples.”

Seafood is one of the healthiest foods on the planet. Its lean protein and omega 3’s make it a nutritional wonder that doctors and dietitians call a super food.

But after a March 2011 earthquake damaged Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on the country’s Pacific coast, fears over radiation leaks fueled speculation, misreporting, and hyperbole about the safety of some seafood. However, the science is unified and clear: seafood is and will continue to be safe to eat in the wake of the tragedy in Japan.

Here you will find precise reports as well as the latest from government regulators to independent scientists about Pacific fisheries and the impact on seafood.

What Experts Are Saying:

Delvan Neville, Oregon State University
“[The] highest level of radioactive contamination… found [in domestic fish] is more than 1,000 times lower than the point where the FDA would even think about whether or not they need to let people eat that food”

Ken Buesseler, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
“I certainly don’t believe the levels we’re going to see on the west coast of North America should be of health concern.”

What the Government & International Agencies are Saying:

Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA):

  • “[EPA, FDA, and NOAA] have high confidence in the safety of seafood products in the U.S. marketplace or exported U.S. seafood products.”
  • “FDA is in close contact with Japanese regulatory authorities…”
  • “The great quantity of water in the Pacific Ocean rapidly and effectively dilutes radioactive material… waters approximately 30km off the coast of Japan [have shown] that radiation levels have dissipated rapidly, reaching drinking water standards…”

World Health Organization (WHO), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), UN Food Agriculture Organization (FAO):

  • “Levels of radioactivity in seafood collected away from the waters surrounding Japan are expected to remain significantly below levels of any public health concern”
  • “The authorities in the U.S.A. are monitoring levels of radioactivity in seafood imported from Japan and have not detected any longer-lived radionuclides (such as Cs-137) so far.”

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission:

  • “Based on the best scientific data available, neither the NRC, nor any of the other federal agencies, state governments in the Western U.S., nor international organizations have identified any evidence that the minute amounts of contamination from the Fukushima site that may reach the West Coast of the U.S. may pose any concerns to the U.S. food supply, water supply, or public health.” -Alison MacFarlane, Chairman

What Research Tells Us:

Scientific American
“…any radionuclides from Fukushima have been diluted by the vastness of the Pacific to insignificant quantities…”

Oregon State University
“To increase their normal annual dosage of radiation by just 1 percent, a person would have to eat more than 4,000 pounds of the highest (radiation) level albacore we’ve seen.”

Miriam Goldstein, Deep Sea News
“…teeny fish in the waters off Japan just a few months after Fukushima had such low levels of radioactivity that they are considered safe to eat under Japanese law. And of this radioactivity, only 10-30% of the total radioactivity found in marine life was attributable to the Fukushima discharges – the rest was from naturally occurring radionuclides… tuna caught off California contains ten times less radiation than even the strictest food limit.”
